Google Shopping for Retailers: The Feed Is the Campaign

In Shopping there are no keywords. The feed decides which searches you appear for, which is why most of the work happens before the campaign exists.

Search advertising has keywords. Shopping has a feed. That single difference reorganises the work: you cannot bid your way out of a bad feed, and you cannot fix a bad feed inside the campaign.

Which is why the useful sequence is unfamiliar. The feed first, the structure second, the bids a distant third.

Titles are the keyword field

The product title is the strongest matching signal you control. Retailers ship the manufacturer’s title and wonder why they appear for the wrong searches.

The pattern that works is dull and effective: brand, product type, key attribute, model, size or variant. Put the words a buyer actually types near the front, because the title is truncated in the interface long before it is truncated in the auction. If your buyers search by material, the material belongs in the title. If they search by room, the room does.

The attributes that quietly decide everything

  • GTIN and brand — missing values suppress eligibility on the comparison surfaces where high-intent buyers are.
  • Product type, your own taxonomy, is what you will later use to structure campaigns. Fill it properly or you will have no structure to build.
  • Availability and price must match the page exactly. A mismatch is a disapproval, and disapprovals arrive without an announcement.
  • Custom labels for margin band, seasonality and stock depth. This is the field that lets you bid on profit rather than revenue, and it is the kind of detail paid media work lives on, and almost nobody uses it.
  • Promotions belong in the merchant promotion feed, not buried on the product page where the auction cannot see them.

Structure so the report can answer a question

One campaign holding every product tells you the account’s average, which is a number that describes nothing you sell. Split by margin band using custom labels, then by product type within that. The reporting then answers the only question that matters: which products earn their spend?

Expect the answer to be uncomfortable. In most catalogues a small minority of items produces the return and a long tail consumes budget at a loss, and the tail is usually protected by someone’s opinion rather than by data.

The page after the click

Shopping traffic lands on a product page, not a designed landing page, which means the product page is the landing page whether it was built as one or not. Stock status, delivery cost and return terms visible without scrolling. A second image that shows scale. A route to a human for the items expensive enough to prompt a question.

For categories where the basket is large and the decision is shared — furniture and interiors is the clearest case — the click is the beginning of a three-week conversation, and the page has to survive being revisited.

Measure the whole window

Judging Shopping on same-session conversion undervalues everything expensive in the catalogue. The buyer compares, leaves, returns from a different device and buys in store. Unless attribution covers that path, the campaign will look like it sells cheap items and nothing else, and the budget will follow that fiction.

If your feed has never had that kind of attention, that is where the money is, and it is the first thing a PPC management engagement does.
